The Classic 1951 Kauri Sloop "Susan"
Description
Susan is a 75-year-old 22-ft double-diagonal kauri sloop with genuine history and a lot of life left in her. I've assembled full documentation of her many adventures over the decades — she's a beautiful, capable boat for her size, and she deserves an owner with the time and resources to do right by her. Unfortunately, after some unforeseen financial setbacks, that owner isn't me.
I'll be upfront: she needs work. But the bones are excellent, and a lot of the expensive, important jobs have already been done.
What's already sorted:
- Hull in great shape — double-diagonal kauri, solid
- Reliable Yanmar 8hp inboard motor
- Brand new battery (replaced last month)
- New bilge pump and packing gland replaced when last hauled out
- Anode replaced last year
- Hull sanded back to primer/wood, re-primed and anti-fouled liberally (Summer 2023)
- Topsides sanded and painted (Summer 2023)
- Anchor and chain in good condition
- Comes with custom canvas cover (functional with mast/boom in place)
- All sails, boom, and rigging included and stored
What needs doing:
- Due for a haul-out: anti-foul and anode replacement
- Deck and topsides are structurally sound but could use a fresh paint/seal
- Exposed exterior wood could use a re-varnish
- Mast and rigging are currently removed. The box mast has significant rot. There are salvaged masts of similar type available at the yard as a replacement option — or run her around the harbour under motor, which she does happily as-is.
Location: On a rented swing mooring at Evans Bay (transferrable to new owner). You can get a good look at her from the main boat ramp dock — she's on the mooring closest to the dock, the yacht without a mast.
She's a tough old boat with great bones, ready for someone who'll give her the attention she deserves. Full history documentation comes with her. Get in touch (TEXT, don't call. my phone doesn't currently accept calls) to arrange a viewing.

Seller comment Sunday, 17 May 2026 Hi just a couple of questions. Is the tabernacle and support structure where mast was stepped rotted too or is it just the mast? Any issues with keel bolts? Would be good to have just a few pics of interior if possible kmc33 (119 • 12:25 pm, Mon, 18 May )Just the mast. Also, I do not know the current state of the keel bolts but I'm happy to set up a viewing if you'd like to assess. I will try to get out to her to take some pictures of the interior later this week. cnmaymon1 (18 • Monday, 18 May 2026 )New photos have been added from the interior, taken yesterday :) Seller comment Tuesday, 26 May 2026 How would this be shipping to chch? Is it even possible? infinite11 (42 • 10:26 pm, Wed, 27 May )To accomplish this, you would need to reach out to a yacht transportation provider like 'Wise Move' or 'Boat Haulage' (there are others but I have never engaged their services so can't recommend). Then it would be a matter of booking with the Evans Bay Boatyard to use their traveller to lift her out and onto the truck. If you want to discuss more directly, please send me an e-mail or text :) cnmaymon1 (18 • Wednesday, 27 May 2026 )
