45ft Spencer "Rhiannon"
Video

Description
A sister ship to the famous Whispers II, Rhiannon is a classic Spencer ex-racing yacht which was built in Nelson in 1980. She had a successful racing career in both coastal and offshore races (you can read about this chapter of her history in the book "Sailors of 41° South").
She is now fitted out as a short-handed fast cruiser. I have spent the last three years living aboard, and have spent the last five months cruising up from Nelson to Auckland, which I did mostly by myself. She is a beautiful yacht and is an absolute delight to sail. She also has a comfy, well-lit cabin. I would love to keep her, but I am moving back to Europe to be closer to friends and family.
Features include: Quality deck hardware; Garmin chartplotter; AIS; depth and wind gauges; 30hp Perkins diesel engine; shore power; two 200ah brand new lithium house batteries; AGM cranking battery; pure-sine wave 1500W inverter, 150W solar panel (with a mount for a second panel); gas califont; head; two showers (cockpit and head); DC side-loading refrigerator with a freezer compartment; gas bottle; gas stove; dinghy (pictured) with a main and spare Yamaha engine; large boom tent; electric anchor windlass; anchor wash-down hose; boarding ladder; and a 15kg anchor and with 50m of chain + a spare anchor with 15m of chain (I have found the ground tackle to be very reliable and easy to set during my cruising).
Questions & Answers
Awesome boat! As a fellow Spencer 32 owner I can absolutely relate to the joy of sailing these yachts. It sounds like you have had a blast owning her. May i ask what cruising speeds you get out of her? All the best with the sale :) lise7 (216 • 2:12 pm, Thu, 4 Jun )Hi. Yes she is a beauty to sail! I plan my passages for five knots, but I regularly cruise at six to seven, even in fairly light winds. Really depends of course. Most I've gotten out of her was 15 knots, though I have heard tale that she did 25 knots in her heyday. I didn't believe that at first, but having talked to multiple people about her and her sister ships I am more inclined to believe! sammod1 (7 • Thursday, 4 June 2026 )Draft? psq (109 • 3:09 pm, Thu, 4 Jun )2.2m sammod1 (7 • Thursday, 4 June 2026 )What is her sail inventory please, spin pole included? zinzan5 (120 • 3:11 pm, Thu, 4 Jun )Nowadays she has only a mainsail and furling genoa. In the past she did have a spinnaker and pole, but not any more. However, the spinnaker halyard is still in place. sammod1 (7 • Thursday, 4 June 2026 )Who designed and built the rudder? zinzan5 (120 • 3:17 pm, Thu, 4 Jun )Rhiannon was built by Bruce Laybourne based on John Spencer's designs. Though it does look like she has had a new rudder at some point because older photos show a different rudder shape. It is secured by a big bronze stock and bolts which are in very good condition. The ship is well balanced with quite little weather helm. sammod1 (7 • Thursday, 4 June 2026 )Other plans? You didn't have her that long.. theodoor (233 • 12:08 pm, Fri, 5 Jun )Yes, I'm going back to Europe to be closer to friends and family. sammod1 (7 • Friday, 5 June 2026 )Hello. How many berth?
