1971 Alfa Romeo GTV
Description
Bellissimo 1971 105 GTJ
A much-admired 105 Alfa coupe in Rosso Alfa AR501 and featured on the cover and page 41 of 'Half Century, Full Throttle', the book celebrating 50 years of the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club NZ (AROCNZ).
I bought the GTJ in 2010 as a parts car but decided to restore it instead. The restoration was completed in 2016 in time for the Junior’s first long drive to the annual AROCNZ Festa weekend in the Bay of Islands, and since then, Festa weekends in New Plymouth, Invercargill and Gisborne, Giros and numerous Club runs.
A 1300 engine originally, but fitted with a 1750 before my purchase. The 1750 goes great with surprising acceleration and torque with the twin Weber 40DCOE32s sucking away. Highly polished cam cover, nice extractors and a PiperCross air filter make the engine look fabulous in the engine bay. 26,500 miles on the speedo which probably means 226,500 miles since new.
I fitted Brembo calipers from a 75 in the front, replacing the puny calipers that came on Juniors. Fitted with seats from a 1750 GTV but I have the low-back original front seats and the rears, all in excellent condition. Running period 15" Superlight mags but I have the 14" steels with hubcaps for the original look when required.
The gearbox was rebuilt in 2025 with new synchros and bearings and good 2nd hand gears. Various other work done over the years – invoices all available. The CarJam report I was able to purchase in 2010 provides details of all owners since importation in 1973. A number of AROCNZ members have owned the GTJ in the past.
Modern additions are a 123 Tune distributor, a reversing camera replacing the reversing light, electric priming fuel pump and a USB port replacing the cigarette lighter. Heaps of spares - engines and spares (even a roof cut) - they will go with the Junior subject to negotiation. One engine was vapour blasted and is ready to be rebuilt one day to make a great display or to go into the car. A page amongst the photos lists the spares.
Photos include some from the restoration.
Questions & Answers
A Photobook recording the restoration from commencement to completion is available for perusal. Seller comment Tuesday, 4 November 2025 Hi there, I would be keen to buy the 1750 seats (for my 1750) should the new owner want to revert to original spec. Cheers Robert 021 1625 002 robert43 (505 • 2:02 pm, Wed, 5 Nov )Noted. The 1750 basket weave pattern seats are nice. I like the washboard headrest risers too. Good opportunity to draw attention to the split in the left rear seat bottom. I normally have a travel rug over that. giovanni105 (148 • Wednesday, 5 November 2025 )
