Description

A classic piece of Australian and NZ motoring history! 1970 VG V8 Coupe (factory V8) In good, original condition this is a great example ready for a new owner to drive or continue to restore. New WOF and registration in Feb/March. Recent and significant investment (15k plus) to bring it back to a good drivable standard after a few years in storage. Mileage is more like 300 000 as it is on second time around but will double check. As per usual it's a regrettable sale but after having it for 24 years it is time for someone else to enjoy it! Any questions please feel free to ask. I'll add more details as required.

The good: Recent work includes

  • New water and fuel pumps
  • New electronic points kit installed
  • New carburettor ( nothing fancy )
  • Cylinder head machined and new parts installed (springs, valves, valve springs, guides, gaskets)
  • New fuel tank and sender
  • Brakes reconditioned front and rear
  • New rear tires
  • New battery
  • New fluids
  • Seals on transmission replaced
  • A lot of other little things like hoses, bearings, electrical work carried out etc
  • New carpets installed in last ten years (car has had very little use since so still in great condition)
  • Twin pipes sound great :)

The not so good:

  • Previous damage or rust repair starting to show on LH rear guard, probably rust underneath coming through.
  • Small rust patches at base of rear window under vinyl, tried to add a pic from inside
  • Rust in roof under vinyl, I have been loathe to investigate as didn't want to start something I knew I wouldn't finish!
  • Hood lining has been chewed by mice while in storage, above driver's side visor (see pic)
  • Drivers side door panels are pretty tired

Overall, for a 56 year old car it is in pretty good nick but as with any car this age there is some work needed. In the 24 years I have owned it I have probably only done around 15000km in it. A lot of the time it has been in storage with rego on hold. Also - won't come with the current plates :)

Questions & Answers

  • Was this originally a 6 cylinder Cheers Pete. mafar (272) • 11:16 am, Sat, 21 Mar Hi Pete, definitely a factory V8. I think it was probably registered incorrectly when systems changed at some stage. I always wondered the same but checked it out. I xan add a photo of the factory numbers plate. • Thankyou for that Chris Cheers Pete mafar (272) • 11:42 am, Sat, 21 Mar Added a pic. The 6H-23 denotes a factory V8. Cheers. Chris debrisslide (340) • Saturday, 21 March 2026
  • A great car. mdl3 (567) • 8:06 pm, Sat, 21 Mar Indeed they are! Everywhere it goes people admire it or have a story about one they used to own or know. debrisslide (340) • Saturday, 21 March 2026
  • Beaut car, I'm rebuilding one as I message but unfortunately no longer have the front seats, would you know of any factory VG bucket seats down your way ?? if so my number is on my bike listing, many thanks Peter hardlydangerous (405) • 8:08 am, Sun, 22 Mar Hi Peter, off the top of my head, no sorry. Fortunately this one has been original and intact since I owned it and I've only really had to replace a few easy to find mechanical parts (except for the fuel tank!). There's a few good Mopar FB groups but you probably already know about those. Hope your resto goes well! Awesome cars! debrisslide (340) • Sunday, 22 March 2026
  • Appreciate reply, you never know unless you ask. hardlydangerous (405) • 10:29 am, Sun, 22 Mar All good - cheers debrisslide (340) • Sunday, 22 March 2026
  • Has this got a dent and rust by left back guard.Any more rust areas. MoparMurry (370) • 2:38 pm, Sun, 22 Mar Hi there, yes, it does have a repair there. There is bog cracking by the looks of it. I will add a close up pic. It was not obvious when I bought the car in 2002 and has just started to show recently. Other rust, in the rear window corners under the vinyl and also on the vinyl seam in the roof on one side. Other than that I think it is pretty good for a 56 year old car. I will update the ad with details of work carried out and what might be issues. Cheers, Chris. debrisslide (340) • Sunday, 22 March 2026
