Description

1973 Citroën SM Automatique, finished in blue and showing 56,802km.

This car was rebuilt by my dad, a genuine labour of love, and presents as a strong, well-sorted driver with further potential for an enthusiast wanting to take it to the next level.

The SM represents the pinnacle of Citroën innovation — a futuristic grand tourer powered by a Maserati-derived V6 from the era when Citroën owned Maserati. With hydropneumatic suspension and DIRAVI steering, it still feels remarkably modern.

Key Features:

  • Left hand drive
  • 2.7L Maserati V6 engine
  • 3-speed Automatique transmission
  • Hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension
  • DIRAVI speed-sensitive power steering
  • Covered glass European-spec headlight design
  • Odometer showing 56,802km

Restoration & Recent Work:

  • Comprehensive rebuild completed by my father
  • Completely stripped and repainted. Originally the vehicle was brown but has been repainted in classic Citroën blue.
  • Brand new leather upholstery completed in 2025
  • Mechanically strong and drives very well

The car is a fantastic open-road cruiser — smooth, composed, and unlike anything else from the 1970s.

What Still Needs Attention: My dad passed away before completing this project, so while the car is in excellent driving condition with exterior and seats redone, some cosmetic work remains. Carpets need replacing and trims need attention.

There are also minor quirks to sort, including an unreliable fuel gauge.

It’s an excellent driver as it stands, with most heavy restoration complete, while still offering the satisfaction of finishing a truly special classic.

SMs are increasingly collectible worldwide and rarely come up for sale locally, especially restored examples.

A unique opportunity to own one of the most distinctive European grand tourers ever built.

All reasonable offers considered. Viewing by arrangement.

  • Been my dream car since the early 1970s. Remains outside my budget. I hope it finds a very good and appreciative buyer. Good value at $85,000! ypsilanti (195) • 10:16 am, Tue, 14 Apr
