1971 MG MGB 4sp Gearbox w/ Overdrive
Description
I bought this as my first project car but have run out of time and now have other priorities. The engine runs beautifully and, like all MGs, it sounds great!
Over the past six months I have spent around $3.5k on the car:
- Fitted a new fuel tank and pump and filters
- Tuned the engine and balanced the carbs - including replaced the dist cap and leads and rotor, and new float needles.
- Replaced the clutch including the spigot bush and thrust bearing
- Fixed the sunroof that used to fly open - new slider parts
- Sourced new steering column cowl and indicator/dipswitch stalk.
- Purchased a new electronic distributor - not fitted yet
- New Engine Mounts.
The unfortunate bit is that rust was identified in a few places by my panel beater in a pre-WoF inspection. It hasn't been for a formal WoF but I know the rust will prevent it passing a WoF as is. It had a brand new WoF the day before I purchased the car in April this year. The car definitely needs repainting as the previous repaint was pretty rough, and the paint is bubbling in a few places.
There is also rust underneath that will need to be fixed before a WoF inspection - see examples in the pictures.
This car in this condition is a project car - but unfortunately, I don't have the gear or the space to do what is required. I'm sad to have to let it go as I really love driving it.
I suggest anyone considering buying the car comes around for a look first so you can be confident in what you are buying.
The car is located on the North Shore Auckland.
Questions & Answers
Hi Chelle110, do you mind just sending me a text? Am interested by your offer. Thanks Seller comment Tuesday, 23 December 2025 Beautiful looking car, have you had a quote to fix the rust spots, i.e reweld etc ?thanks tarky1 (71 • 12:12 pm, Sat, 27 Dec )We didn't get an estimate because the panel beater can't estimate the overall work until they start stripping back - we can give a rough guess at $10k plus painting. It is good that all the body and mechanical parts are readily available for the MGs. solejp (262 • Saturday, 27 December 2025 )Hi. What was the original colour of the car? As an owner of 5 MGBs (who's done sills, floors etc) this rust is relatively easy to do - the dogleg is a patch panel, the other 2 parts are ok when the guard is off, same jacking point and its a very small car to paint (and straight now). Paul trogedon (2543 • 10:02 am, Mon, 29 Dec )The original colour was yellow - you can see it if you look carefully as whoever did the current paint job just masked around the fuel filler and chrome moldings. solejp (262 • Monday, 29 December 2025 )Is the Rego on hold? gemco8 (11 • 8:05 am, Wed, 31 Dec )Yes it is solejp (262 • Wednesday, 31 December 2025 )Would you take genuine, what you mentioned having spent on it in last six months (As cash genuine offer) no mucking around or time wasting after ? fairness_ (2 • 8:15 pm, Thu, 1 Jan )No thanks solejp (262 • Thursday, 1 January 2026 )Happy new year! fairness_ (2 • 8:20 pm, Thu, 1 Jan )Thank you, and to you too. solejp (262 • Thursday, 1 January 2026 )We shooters that the odometer reading is in miles.
