Description

78' MGB in green.

Great little car, a joy to drive.

This example is in working order. Has a WOF & reg till late October.

The 1.8L, 4 cylinder engine provides enough power for NZ streets. 4 speed manual transmission. Able to comfortably cruise at 80-90 kph (we have done some mortorway driving) Soft top in good health. Near new tyres. Bluetooth radio. Just standard 4 speed. Being an almost 50 year old car, it does have it's quirks and will be an ongoing project to some degree. Speedo has recently gone out.

Improvements made during our ownership include:

  • New centre console
  • New brake lines and hoses.
  • New electronic distributor
  • New cooling fans
  • New clutch slave cylinder
  • New alternator
  • New oil engine and gearbox.

These have all improved the drive and reliability of this car. Previous owners have also kept it well maintained.

Located in East Auckland.

Questions & Answers

  • Hi Does it have O/D meist (15) • 5:05 am, Tue, 3 Mar No sorry but it happy at 85-95km on the motorway. Easy conversion if you feel the need. We just use it locally on weekends. Thanks. marc31 (1390) • Tuesday, 3 March 2026
  • Was this car once LHD? stgermain1 (589) • 8:25 am, Thu, 19 Mar It was imported from America, so was most likely converted from left to right hand drive once brought here. marc31 (1390) • Thursday, 19 March 2026
  • Hi, is there any rust and how is the upholstery fox129 (37) • 7:19 pm, Wed, 25 Mar So what I've been told is a large number were exported to USA back in the late 70s. They didn't sell well over there so in America they factory converted them back to right hand drive and gave them a full underbody seal coat plus a few other upgrades then exported them back to UK, AUS,NZ. What it means is right hand drive looks factory, and there is no underbody rust. Main body is good other than the usual spot lifting commonly found on classic cars. I'm a still slowly restoring it. marc31 (1390) • Wednesday, 25 March 2026
  • Hi again, is the conversion to right hand drive certified . Regards Bryan fox129 (37) • 7:40 pm, Wed, 25 Mar Factory done back in the late 70s. Read my comments above. Cheers. marc31 (1390) • Wednesday, 25 March 2026

  • Thank-you for your reply. Are you able to post a photo of rust spots. I’m at the other end of the country so bit hard to pop in for a look. Cheers Bryan fox129 (37) • 7:50 pm, Wed, 25 Mar Call me if your interested. Numbers listed. No structural rust at all. Flew through last vtnz wof. marc31 (1390) • Wednesday, 25 March 2026
  • Hi, has the rear boot lid been replaced as it looks like it is Matt black. Cheers Bryan fox129 (37) • 8:04 pm, Fri, 27 Mar Just had it vinyl wrapped. Trying different options as I restore it. Found out yesterday when put on the hoist it has a rebuilt overdrive gearbox, just hasn't been wired up yet. Solid car. No structural rust but a good fresh paint job and it would be a keeper. marc31 (1390) • Friday, 27 March 2026
  • Hi Steve, thank you for your reply. Bryan fox129 (37) • 12:12 pm, Sat, 28 Mar All good. Still not sure if it is OD gearbox. Getting different advise. 4 speed runs well though. Have ordered replacement speedo cables and comes with a boot load of spares. marc31 (1390) • Saturday, 28 March 2026

  • Mg s subject to hidden rust, can you advise? pooida (161) • 10:04 pm, Sun, 19 Apr Ive had a few old boys look through it that have and currently have them and they all say is a tidy example. No obvious structural anyway. We've only had it a short time so can only go by what we see and the vtnz wof station where it past its inspection. Its ex USA believe where they added extra underbody protection layers of paint so I've been told. Its 50 years old so you know its an old car Wright. Inspections welcome. marc31 (1390) • Sunday, 19 April 2026
