Triumph Vitesse 2.5PI
Description
This Mk 1 Vitesse is a historic race car with a Schedule K Certificate of Description. It was built in the 1970’s as a rally and race car, and upgraded to 2.5 PI spec in the 1990’s. It raced extensively in the North island during the 70’s and 80’s and later in the South Island.
I bought the Vitesse as a reliable spare car to race in the CMRC pre78 class when my Dolomite Sprint was having its engine rebuilt, but it turned out to need a lot of work, now all done at a cost exceeding the purchase price. It now has:
- New Racetech harness
- New heavy duty wheel studs,
- New plugs and Lumenition ignition as yet unused
- New alternator
- Reconditioned fuel pump
- New exhaust
- New front brake pads
- New overdrive solenoid and toggle switch on gearshift
- New rev counter
- An extensive wiring upgrade including labelled bayonet fuses and replacing main feed from the battery
Already in place were:
- Fibreglass bonnet and lexan side and rear windows
- Adjustable Koni’s with Mk2 Rotoflex driveshafts
- 4 speed box with A type overdrive on 3 and 4
- High pressure oil pump
- Head ported by Les Hunter, fully balanced engine with exceptional torque
- 2 x spare windscreens and non-overdrive driveshaft
It is fun to drive and looks good on track. It has finally achieved race ready status, has near new tyres, and I am only selling it because I have just bought a third race car and decided the Triumphs have to go.
Both Triumphs are officially accepted into the Classic Motor Racing Club’s pre78 class so come and race in pre78!
Questions & Answers
Which is quicker the Dolemite or the Vitesse? summerleaze (155 • 9:26 am, Sun, 1 Feb )Hard to say as I haven’t driven the Vitesse since the upgrades. My feeling is it must be the Vitesse- the torque is astonishing. The Dolomite is more developed mechanically and needs only a driver who is not a cautious 82 year old to unlock its potential. bmwsaab (43 • Sunday, 1 February 2026 )
