MER #1 Historic Racecar
Description
MER - Chassis Number 1
Registered NZ Historic Racecar
The Original MER.
Built by Matamata Engineering for Les Reisterer (M.E.R.) in 1967. This car has a significant racing history. Les used it for grass track events, circuit racing and hill climbs.
The most successful era was when Doug Cross raced it in the seventies. He achieved many wins in the very competitive era of hill climbs when Rod Millen was racing the buggy. Doug Cross sold it to Dennis Phillips who also raced it competitively. I bought the car, less engine, in 1977. I fitted it with a 1098cc motor and raced for a few years for Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club with a modicum of success.
It then sat in the shed, as they do, for a number of years. I undertook a long rebuild which I finished at the end of 2023. The car has had almost everything replaced or rebuilt. Although not quite track ready its not far off.
Although I’d love to keep it my wish is that it gets out on a race track again. I am not in a position to do that so I’m looking for a new home for it.
