MIstral Race Car

The Mistral was created in England in the 1950's, the body design by Bill Ashton who emigrated to NZ and set up working with Bob Blackburn at Weltex Plastics in Christchurch, producing what was NZ's first fibreglass self-build car. A few years later, Emslie & Flockton in Dunedin acquired the body moulds of which this car is one of, manufactured in 1959. Originally, these bodies were fitted to Ford E93A or 100E chassis or similar using the same donor suspension and mechanical components. - a Mistral was entered & driven by Bob Blackburn in the 1957 NZ Grand Prix at Ardmore. This car here was prepared for racing in the late 70's using a custom-built tubular chassis with Triumph front suspension and powered by a Ford pre-crossflow 1500cc engine & gearbox, thus the car is VCC eligible with all current documentation and Log-book, and weighs in at approximately 600Kg. Restored in 2007, features front disc brakes, drums rear, twin 40 Side-draught Webers, electronic ignition, new Hankook 185/70x14 tyres, Race-Tech seats, 5-point Harness, Super-Lite wheels, Half-race cam, Ford forged-pistons, new crankshaft & Cylinder-head, lightened fly-wheel, approx 110HP, dynoed at 112mph. Probably one of the most campaigned Mistrals in the South Island over the past 40 years, it has competed at Wigram, Ruapuna, Levels, Queenstown, Lyttelton, Nelson, Waimate, Teretonga, Dunedin, Highlands Park & numerous sprints and hillclimbs. This car is mentioned in Graham Vercoe and Eileen McMillan's Publications, and features in NZ Classic Car Magazine (Nov 2019) Car comes with a huge history file, including a letter from Bill Rossi-Ashton (2002) the original Designer, receipts for thousands of dollars, original Mistral Brochure and is Road-registered.
