control switch positions: press the "UP" button and the pump puts out hydraulic fluid at pressure one direction no button pressed, the valve stays closed, no hydraulic fluid goes in or out, the attached hydraulic cylinder stays where it is at. press "DOWN" button, and the pump puts out hydraulic fluid at pressure in the other direction
