Meet the Finalists for People's Choicest Dairy
Have your say on the best dairy in New Zealand! Vote for People’s Choicest and celebrate how Kiwi live.
Ice scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
The nominations are in and three iconic Kiwi dairies have been named as finalists in Trade Me Property’s Peoples Choicest Awards - Dunedin’s Rob Roy Dairy, New Plymouth’s Iona Dairy and Darfield Dairy in Canterbury.
Rob Roy Dairy, Dunedin
No stranger to Dunedin’s student population, Rob Roy Dairy is famous for its legendairy ice creams with nominations calling out not only the size of the scoop but the range of flavours, (including dairy free and allergen options) and the price with a massive two-scoop serve coming in at $2.50.
Rob Roy, located in a prime, central location in close proximity to Otago University’s campus, has been in business for more than 30 years and is a part of the fabric of everyday student life in Dunedin.
Iona Dairy, New Plymouth
Another nomination looking to scoop the top prize is New Plymouth’s Iona Dairy. World famous in Taranaki, Iona Dairy is widely known for its sizable ice creams (can you sense a theme?) - whether it’s a single or double you’ll need to lick quickly if the sun is shining.
Rumour has it, this local institution is even covered off in tourist brochures for what not to miss when visiting New Plymouth. Look out Len Lye Centre!
Darfield Dairy, Darfield
Drive half an hour west of Christchurch and you’ll find Darfield, with a population of around 3,000, the town in rural Canterbury is also known as 'The township under the Nor' West Arch.' This is a reference to the weather phenomenon which often displays a flat arch of cloud layered above clear sky and mountains.
But it’s not the weather that’s the draw card here, it’s Darfield Dairy: “home of the big ice cream” on the town’s main drag that brings in the punters.
The shop, with three large freezers of ice cream to choose from, serves up huge scoops which proudly billow out (and if you’re not quick, drip) over the sides of the cone. Locals, tourists and those on summer road trips make a beeline here for a cool snack sure to keep the whole family happy.
