Life in Kohimarama
Access to the ocean, some of the best views in the city and one of Auckland’s most scenic commutes – all of this is on offer to those who chose to call Kohimarama home. Nestled in between Mission Bay and St. Helier’s, Kohi is one of Auckland’s most popular beachside suburbs, south of the Harbour Bridge. Here’s a closer look at what it has to offer:
- Kohi beach: if you consider ocean access as a right, not a privilege, you could do a lot worse than Kohi. Its white sand beach is often a lot less crowded than that of Mission Bay, and provides gorgeous, unobstructed views out to Rangitoto Island. For sailing enthusiasts, Kohimarama Yacht Club is a great resource to have on your doorstep.
- Madills Farm Playground: with equipment to suit children ranging from tots to teenagers, The playground, and the surrounding reserve with sports fields, is a great spot for a family day out.
- Cafes and restaurants: no beachside suburb is complete without a collection of quality cafes and restaurants and, in this department, Kohi definitely doesn’t disappoint. It should be no surprise that seafood from Kohi Fresh Fish & Takeaways is a firm favourite among locals, and there’s a great local bakery to boot!

Getting around
We’ve already mentioned that living in Kohimarama provides the opportunity for one of Auckland’s most scenic commutes – along Tamaki Drive. It’s fair to say that this stretch of road can get busy during peak commuting hours, but there are also buses running from Kohi, and cycling is another popular option. From the beachfront, it’s about 9km along Tamaki Drive, into the city.
Of course, depending on where in Kohi you live, there’s also the option to go over the top, via Kepa Road.
