Description

This 1937 Riley Kestrel is NZ new and been in the previous ownership for 34 years. Largely original with a pre-selector 4 speed gearbox and fitted with the twin carburettor option. The engine has been rebuilt with modern shell bearings and a modern cartridge oil filter system. The interior is 89 years well worn, and original which belies it's unique value and it is hoped a new owner will appreciate this and not race into a full restoration. Awfully reluctant to let this car go, as was the last owner. I have two of these and am retaining either one and don't mind which. The white one is a restored Sprite, but twice the price. Previously owned by an Austrian gentleman - Roman Schiff and sent to the UK for restoration. I have now been asked for more info. on the white Sprite and have downloaded some photos from the file.

  • Might be a silly question but can they go up to highway speeds? forgatath (4) • 12:06 pm, Fri, 27 Mar Greetings Forgatath. Not at all a silly question. The answer is yes and no. Yes because they can be driven at 100kms per hour and over, but they get rather "busy". One previous owner said 100 all day. However I cruise them at 90, which I think is the sweet spot and on occasions more. After driving a modern car they are certainly challenging and different. I love driving them and look forward to the next opportunity. BTW the engines were very advanced for the mid 1930s. Cheers wit8234 (147) • Friday, 27 March 2026
  • Hi Neville, does the red 1.5 litre have an aluminium body over a wooden frame or is this model steel bodied. If this car has a steel body does it have a wooden frame. Cheers Bryan fox129 (37) • 5:20 pm, Tue, 7 Apr Hello Bryan, The body is aluminium and there is some wooden framing on a steel frame. The mudguards are steel and much of the structure. Bonnet is aluminium. Cheers wit8234 (147) • Tuesday, 7 April 2026
  • Thank you Neville, further questions I have is in regard to the condition of the steel frame and chassis in terms of is there any rust? How is the wooden frame, is there any rot. Can you please advise if the vehicle has a current WOF and when does it expire. Is the car registered.? Is the exterior restored or is original. Sorry for so many questions but trying to gain an overall picture. Regards Bryan fox129 (37) • 8:02 pm, Tue, 7 Apr Hello again Bryan. Chassis is solid and all the wood that can be seen is also solid. The warrant expires in around 10 months time. Registration has recently been placed on hold and will be registered when sold. The exterior is sound but in need of a repaint. Tyres, wheels, hubs and splines are all excellent. Interior is 89 years old and scruffy. As to be expected of a car of almost 90 years old, it comes with no warranty and as is. Cheers Neville wit8234 (147) • Tuesday, 7 April 2026
  • Hi Neville, does the red car have a twin overhead cam engine. Cheers Bryan fox129 (37) • 7:50 pm, Wed, 15 Apr Hello Bryan, this question is often asked. The Riley has twin camshafts and they are cross flow heads however the camshafts are high in the block and opearate the valves via short pushrods. This results in the appearance of the engine looking like an overhead cam unit. Cheers Neville wit8234 (147) • Wednesday, 15 April 2026
