When is Mother’s day in NZ?
In Aoteroa New Zealand, Mother’s day falls on the second Sunday of May, so circle that day in the calendar , and get your preparations underway nice and early. With the big day following hot on the heels of Easter and Anzac Day, it can be easy to get caught up in those public holidays and forget (for the record, we think the mums deserve their own public holiday).
Special Mother’s day cards
We’ll get to the gifts in a second, but I think we can all agree that Mother’s day is all about the sentiment. This occasion is dedicated to letting our mums know that we’re grateful for all they do for us, and want to say thank you. And there’s no better way to do that than a little message from the heart.
Whether your mum likes classic or quirky, you’ll find the perfect Mother’s day cards on Trade Me.
Mother’s day gifts for the “just get me a card” mum
As we say, cards are important, but if you take the “just get me a card” line at face value, maybe mum needs to teach you a thing or two about reading between the lines.
With winter on its way, a lot of mums want a new pair of slippers. Ugg, Emu or New Zealand made sheepskin are all great options.
Speaking of winter, a pamper package never goes amiss. Whip up a pack of a wheat bag, bath salts, candle and anything else you think will take her fancy to create a toasty home. Add in a hair mask from the range on the Tonis Hair for the gift of luscious locks.
There’s nothing better than curling up under a cosy throw and putting your head into a good book – which makes an E-Reader a great gift! A Kindle or Kobo can store thousands of books so that mum can read until her heart’s content.
If mum prefers the feeling of turning pages, grab her one of these popular books like Spare by Prince Harry, Where the Crawdads Sing or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
As the saying goes, when it comes to gifts it’s the thought that counts. Hopefully these ideas have helped get the cogs turning on what the mum in your life will really love…along with a bit of extra sleep.
Mother’s day gifts for the foodie mum
Realistically, a KitchenAid mixer isn’t in most peoples’ Mother’s Day gift budget but there are plenty of other great options for foodies in our sizeable kitchen range. If your Mum is into baking or cuisine, sneakily find out what tools she wishes she had, or have a browse of these fantastic foodie gift ideas. Air fryers are a popular request - it may be time to join the revolution if you’ve held out this far!
Krosno glasses could be a great gift for the mum who loves to entertain - check out the gin balloons or stemless flutes for something special. For the coffee lovers, a fresh espresso is possible anywhere with these portable espresso machines – perfect for on-the-go coffee fixes for campervan adventurers or explorers, while drink bottles like the Frank Green’s range are the ideal reusable coffee cup for those who like their beverages to be hot to the last drop.
Mum a fan of cookbooks? Passionate Aotearoa foodies will love Monique Fiso’s Hiakai if it’s not already gracing their shelves, while Ottolenghi is always popular with fans of cuisine.
Mother’s day gifts for the busy mum
Mums often pick up a lot of mental load. While there’s no magic fix, a little technology can help make life that little bit easier.
A smart watch and Chromecast are great options, or go all in with a voice-controlled assistant so she can make calls, play music and even dim the lights handsfree could be a winner.
A smartphone printer can help save time on the admin of printing family pics - snap a bunch of everyday moments of her with the kids in the lead up so you can print them on the day. If mum’s already got a wall full of photos and no room for anymore, she might like a digital photo frame – WiFi controlled to display a range of photos over time.
While anything cleaning related is largely best avoided for gifting, this unwritten rule doesn’t always apply. We reckon you'd probably be forgiven if you picked up the new Bissell Spinwave Robot Vacuum for clean floors with the press of a button. Aaaand, it does wet and dry cleaning!
