Trade Me Jobs chuffed to hit #1 in October
Four years, two months and 24 days after it launched, Trade Me Jobs finished October as New Zealand’s #1 employment site, claiming the top spot after attracting 860,922 domestic unique browsers.
Our recently appointed Head of Trade Me Jobs, Pete Ashby, was chuffed to have hit number one as his team has been on a mission to attract more Kiwis than any other job site since Trade Me Jobs officially passed Seek on domestic page impressions back in July 2009.
Here are four quick things that the Trade Me Jobs team have identified as being crucial to the site's success since launching in August 2006:
- fantastic support from the industry as we built the site from scratch;
- a simple, easy-to-use site that reflects the way Kiwis look for jobs;
- a commitment to non-metropolitan areas that had not been served well by others in the market; and
- making job advertising more affordable. More...
Free volunteer listings in Canterbury
At Trade Me Jobs, we're keen to do our little bit to help Canterbury out as the region begins to pick up the pieces after the devastating earthquake.
For the rest of the month, casual listings for all voluntary roles listed in the Canterbury region will be free. These roles will remain on Trade Me Jobs for 30 days (unless removed earlier by the advertiser).
You'll see a little line of red text letting you know about this when you list a job too. More...
2010 NetGuide Awards x 3
Thanks heaps to everyone who took the time to click a vote for a Trade Me site in the 2010 People's Choice NetGuide Web Awards.
Brendon (Trade Me Property), Pete (Trade Me Jobs) and Terry (Trade Me) were all on deck at the flash awards ceremony in Auckland, and each of our three Trade Me musketeers ended up with a little yellow NetGuide cube to look after on the night. We've put them in pride of place in the foyer at Trade Me HQ.
Here’s what we picked up, thanks to the votes you sent our way: More...

What’s happening in the jobs market?
Here’s our take on the state of the employment market, based on a study of 30,000 listings on Trade Me Jobs in the second quarter of 2010 (April-June).
1. Momentum is growing?
We’ve seen a surge in activity in the past few months, a sure sign that things are heading in the right direction. Listing numbers grew 15%, an indication that companies are expanding and consumer confidence is on the rise ahead of the upcoming tax changes.
2. IT jobs still #1?
IT, sales and HR & recruitment have all been particularly active, with listing numbers up 30% compared with the same time last year.
Auckland (21%), Waikato (20%), Gisborne (27%) and Wellington (19%) all delivered strong listings growth, but it was Taranaki that lead the charge with a 43% increase.
3. Pay packets down?
Pay packets on offer for the majority of jobs have dropped over the past year – aside from IT and banking & finance, which saw salaries for IT project managers and business analysts grow by 17% and 11% respectively. (Click to expand the table below.)
In terms of location, Wellington was one of the few areas where pay rates rose, and Wellington City topped the highest paid locations with an average pay of $74,647. (Click to expand the table below.)
4. What does the future hold?
We predict that the demand for highly skilled candidates will continue to increase, and so will the pay packets required to attract them.
However, NZ is not immune to international events, and we expect the rate of growth in the employment market to slow amid global concerns about a potential ‘double-dip’ recession.
