A little patience after the Christchurch quake
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you will be aware that early on Saturday morning Canterbury was awoken by a big shake. It’s times like these that often bring the Trade Me message boards to life, and the weekend was no exception. It was humbling to see many messages posted that showed that people were not only talking about the earthquake and its impact, but exchanging information and working out how to help each other. When civil emergencies like this hit, the message boards act a pretty useful conduit to information and also a way for people to support each other.
At a purely practical level, we’ve received several queries from people asking about their trades, and what happens if the item they’re selling is broken, or if they’re waiting for an item from a seller in the earthquake zone. It probably goes without saying for many, but we’d urge everyone for a little bit of patience and understanding around these issues at the moment. If you are expecting something you have bought from a Canterbury seller please try to be as flexible as possible.
Obviously life has been disrupted for thousands of Trade Me members in Canterbury, and big issues like access to clean drinking water and getting the electricity back on are going to be higher up the priority list than packing off a Trade Me parcel! More...
Shining the spotlight on service
We thought we were long overdue in tipping our hats to some of the traders providing truly outstanding customer service on the site. We asked our Analytics team (thanks Suhel) to run some numbers to shine the spotlight on some of our most impeccable traders.
The traders highlighted here all have mighty impressive records, having successfully completed more than 60,000 trades between them without a single negative feedback in sight. Some people just know how to get things right (and put things right), and they all come highly recommended by your fellow Trade Me members.

New import transaction fee
Since plenty of Trade Me members are importing all sorts of wonderful (and occasionally weird) things to be sold, we thought we'd pass on some information about an upcoming change to the fees charged by Customs on new imports.
From 1 July 2010, a new import transaction fee of $24.75 ($22.00 plus GST) will be applied to a range of personal imports that attract GST and import duty of $50 or more. This would include items such as jewellery, clothing and electrical appliances.
There will also be a new MAF biosecurity system entry levy of $12.50 (including GST) charged whenever the import transaction fee applies.
For more information on the new fee and the new levy, check out Consumer or New Zealand Customs.
