Elections: What’s allowed on the Message Board?

Written by The Trade Me team in General at 10:00am, Fri 19 Sep 2014

We don’t need to remind you that it’s time for Kiwis to have their say on Election Day this Saturday.

What you do need to know is that it’s an offence under section 197 of the Electoral Act to publish anything on Election Day that could influence a person’s vote. Even publishing a party name could potentially land you with a hefty fine.

In short: please don’t post your political views on the Message Board on Election Day until the polls close at 7:00pm.

If you happen to spot anything new on the Message Board on Saturday that could land a person in hot water, please report it by using the links at the bottom of any thread so we can take the appropriate action. Posts made prior to Saturday are OK.

If you have any questions about the information above, please let us know.

If you’re a first-time voter and are not quite sure where to start, head over to Virgin Voter for some handy hints.

Haven't enrolled to vote yet? It's not too late
If you haven't yet enrolled to vote, there is still time - you can still do so before 11:59pm tonight. To enrol, do it online or head down to your local post shop. Then you can either vote straight away at an advance voting location, or on the day.

Above all, be sure to get out there, have your say and vote for the future of our country.
