Canterbury earthquake: an update

Written by The Trade Me team in General and Scheduled maintenance at 9:45am, Tue 1 Mar 2011

Trade Me will observe two minutes' silence for the victims of the devastating Canterbury earthquake today. As a result, we will be offline between 12:51pm and 12:53pm, one week after the tragic events in Christchurch.

We think it is important to acknowledge the friends and family of the people who have died and are missing. (Please note that all auctions due to close between 12.45pm and 1pm will be extended by 30 minutes.)

We have also made a change to the “seller success fee top-up” and have added the Salvation Army’s Canterbury Earthquake Relief Appeal as an option for sellers, replacing our long-term partner Forest & Bird.

This means that when placing a listing, sellers can choose to round their success fee up to the nearest dollar and donate the difference to the earthquake appeal. For example, if the success fee is $1.80, it gets rounded up to $2 and 20c is donated. Donors will receive an email receipt at the end of the tax year (around 1 April) in order to claim a tax rebate.

Participating auctions will have the Salvation Army logo on display - click the below for an example of how this will look.
