Auctions not closing earlier tonight

Earlier tonight we experienced an issue on the site which resulted in some auctions taking longer than normal to close. We’re past the worst of it and auctions are now closing as expected with a small backlog to catch up on.

We’ll be nutting out the main cause of this during the night and we're sorry if this has caused frustration for any of you.

Trade Me for iPhone app update

Our clever team of mobile developers have been hard at work creating all kinds of handheld awesomeness, and today we’re excited to unveil our new-look Trade Me app for iPhone.

This update introduces a fresh look and feel, and the following new features:

Notifications
These are a great way to help you stay up to date with your buying and selling activity. For example, if you’re outbid, asked a question, or receive a fixed priced offer, a notification will appear under the new Notifications tab. Important consumer law change applies from today

From today, sellers must make it clear if they are ‘in trade’ when selling items online.

This will mean that consumers know when they are protected under the Fair Trading Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act. The Fair Trading Act applies to what people in trade say and do when selling goods and services. The Consumer Guarantees Act provides guarantees for when you purchase from a person in trade.

If you’re a professional seller and selling items in trade, the law requires you to disclose this to members when you’re selling items on Trade Me. And if you don’t, the Commerce Commission can fine you.  More...

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin has kindly penned a guest post about the upcoming changes to consumer law that kick in later this month.

Your rights as a consumer are about to get stronger but unless you know what they are, you might still be ripe for a rip-off.

Starting here at Trade Me, a vocal supporter of consumer law reform, you are about to get a bunch of rights as a buyer (and obligations as a seller) you never had before. From 17 June, no matter how you buy something on this site – auction or Buy Now – if it’s from a business you will have rights if something goes wrong. Also businesses will have to identify themselves so you’ll know if you’re buying from a professional or from some bod who’s clearing out his flat. More...
